Hi Russell & Sarah and pups!
Sounds like you are loving the sun, sand and surf of Australia! Very happy for you! Kevin and I and our kids are loving living in Northern Ontario in the clean and quiet and wild! I am just finishing up my Masters and left a 9- 5 (well 9-9) job that just did not make me happy any longer... maybe it is in the genes, eh cuz? Love to you.
Andrea

Just wanted to say hi. We've got three countries in common (I was born in West Bromwich, immigrated to Toronto, and lived in Sydney for a while in my youth. I have a Lab, too!) I don't blame you for heading off to Australia after winter in Ottawa — the only time in my life I've ever been colder was during winter in Winnipeg! Looking forward to hearing about your adventure as it unfolds.

Hi Maria, thanks for the comment! And I've been to Winnipeg and experienced a couple of cold snaps there... pretty intense! Hope you enjoy my experiences of sun and sand as I move to the Australian part of the journey (with our Labs!)... hope to hear from you again.

Read your article in Weekly Telegraph. At last there's someone who understands that I don't willingly decide to support England when they play sport - my body decides who it's supporting and lets me know by raising my pulse & blood pressure appropriately. It always decides for England!

Hi Jane, I totally understand and I hope you enjoyed the article. Should be another one coming soon in the Telegraph. Another England match-up against Australia today - careful with that blood pressure!

Dude, just read your article about the true cost of expat living in the UK Telegraph. Nice work. You sound very similar to myself and a work colleague who, while both enjoying living in Sydney (but only in the CBD), pine for the culture and excitement of London (I was born in Nottingham, grew up in NZ, but owned a house in Putney and worked in the City for 6 years). You summed it up nicely - "life is generally dull, they miss friends and family, lack any real sense of belonging, would prefer a less macho culture, and want more of the history commonly found in Europe. "

Basically ANY kind of culture, other than bogan, would be nice. We love taking the piss out of Aussie bogan culture (www.thingsboganslike.com is a favourite) but that can only get you through so many days. Living here *is* expensive, but fortunately I get paid well and don't own a car or property here (we use go-get and renting is cheaper than buying). My sister lives in Freshwater, and I did too for a while until that god-awful commute on the L90 did my head in. There is *just* enough culture in the CBD (Spacy in Richard 3, the opera house, Tiesto at the Horden etc) to keep you sane. Just.

Personally I don't like Australia as much as New Zealand. I'm being objective here, not being a kiwi. NZ is more gentle than Oz, both geographically and in its people, who seem a lot less ‘Americanised’ than Aussies. If you liked Canada and get sick of Oz then I would suggest you give it a go (just don’t go to Wellington unless you are seeking to replicate the experience of living in Blackpool or Skegness, without the amusement factor).

As for me and my work chum, we pour over the Telegraph and Zerohedge and try and plan a return to London that bypasses the Olympics and the imminent destruction of the EU. Interesting times, just not here in Australia!

Hey Dave, thanks for the comments about the Telegraph article. Glad you liked it. Definitely sounds like we're coming from a similar angle. Thanks for sharing that website - I haven't laughed so much in a long time, although I won't start branding all of my mates here as 'bogans' for fear of getting kicked out tout de suite!

Interesting that you moved into the CBD away from Freshwater because of the woeful transport options. I have a similar problem but haven't made the effort to fix things. The L90 used to be the bane of my existence but now I drive which is marginally better.

I'm a big fan of NZ, having been there a few times and definitely agree that it is very similar to Canada - and for that I like it a lot. The gentleness and scenery appeal to me, as do the less American identity, although I'll take your advice and avoid Wellington!

Make sure you stop by again - always appreciate different and diverse opinions on here :) Take care.

More of a technical heads up--the blog doesn't display too well on iPhones at least in the US--letters have a washed out grey effect.

Thanks for the heads-up. Will look into it asap. Cheers.
